OYO, a popular travel booking platform known for its couple-friendly accommodations, has introduced changes to its check-in policy for unmarried couples in Meerut. According to the revised guidelines, couples will now be required to provide valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings. The new policy, effective from this year, was reported by news agency PTI.
The company stated that its partner hotels have been given the discretion to accept or decline couple bookings based on their judgment and local societal norms. OYO emphasized that this move aligns with the need to respect local social sensitivities.
“OYO is dedicated to ensuring safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberties, we also recognize the importance of collaborating with law enforcement and civil society groups in the regions we operate,” said Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, as quoted by PTI.
Based on feedback from Meerut, the policy could potentially be extended to other cities, the company added. This change is part of OYO’s broader initiative to reshape perceptions and position itself as a brand offering safe and inclusive experiences for families, students, business travelers, religious tourists, and solo travelers.
OYO also announced nationwide initiatives to promote safe hospitality. These include collaborating with police and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels involved in unethical practices, and taking action against unauthorized properties misusing the OYO branding.
“We will continue to monitor and evaluate this policy and its impact regularly,” Sharma added.
This revision marks a significant step in OYO’s efforts to balance personal freedoms with local cultural sensibilities, ensuring a safer and more responsible hospitality experience for all its guests.
